What Lives Under Your Bed?

Image hosted by Photobucket.comIt's going to be scary... what is under our bed.

Gary and I had to buy a new mattress and box spring. Well, I shouldn't say we had to... we elected to. Anyway, we currently have a queen size bed and have had that for about 15 years. When we graduated from the full size (where each of us had the equivalent of a crib sized mattress to sleep on), the queen bed was perfect. The comfort level of the queen hasn't changed it's the size. Or maybe it's OUR size that has changed too much and it now seems to be cramped. On vacation we slept in a king size and both of us commented everyday how well we slept. Gary is always getting up in the night to pee, which he still did, but I didn't wake up when he did so. Ah.... it was heaven!

So, on Tuesday we will be the proud new owners of a Serta Perfect Night King with a pillow top. The only drawback to this is I have to clean my bedroom before then....including the horrors that reside under it and around it. I'm a good one for reading magazines in bed, then tossing them on the floor when I'm done. I think there are some from 1997 there... seriously! Our bedroom is a total mess. We don't use bureaus, we use open shelves which are piled with clothes we don't wear. The ones we do wear are in laundry baskets. How embarrassing to admit that we live out of a laundry baskets. What kind of example am I setting for my daughter? She has a beautiful new dresser in her room that I did put all her clothes in when in was new. As she wore the clothes, I never put them back in. She lives out of a basket too.

Under the bed is another story in itself. I don't know what's there but I know it's dusty and at least 10 years old. Seriously, I've never cleaned under the bed in our bedroom. I'm not a bad housekeeper really.... and I really do like my house to be clean...and it usually is...except for my bedroom. If you walked through my house, you'd probably say to yourself "Here's a woman who cares what her home looks like". However, if you opened the bedroom door and looked in, you'd be horrified that those same people used that room. For some reason it doesn't bother me. Dust in the diningroom bothers me but that same amount of dust on my nightstand is no big deal. Maybe my bedroom is the only room I truly am myself in? The rest of the house is for 'show' and this room is mine?

I am envious of those who have a perfect bedroom. A beautiful, plump bed with matching comforter, shams and bedskirt, coordinating curtains and nice artwork and knick knacks artfully placed around the room. No sign of clothing once worn, to be worn, almost worn and will never wear thrown around the room. Nightstand free of clutter except for a clock, phone and lamp and maybe the current night's reading book. Ok internet readers, I promise to try and clean my bedroom before Tuesday. Then in 2015 I promise to clean it again!

I have found that if I rearrange all the furniture at least twice a year this will keep the underside of the bed cleaned out. Most of the time. But then I bore easily and just have to move things.
But right now I have a 70 lb. punching bag with stand under my bed.

Oh THANK GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't TELL you how relieved I am to find out there is another person JUST LIKE ME out there!!! I have OFTEN wondered if there is something wrong with me that my house is spotless and my own, personal space is... um.... not spotless. You just described my bedroom to a "T", well minus the magazines, I read books. LOL

My house is generally clean as well, probably wouldn't pass the white glove test...but then again if anyone tried I'd probably kick them out of my house. My bedroom (Our bedroom I call it mine becasue I am the only one who ever cleans it), is never quite as clean. The bed, however is always made, I am actually compulsive about my bed being made, if I'm running late and attempt to leave it unmade I feel almost panicky and turn around and make it. The bedding and curtains do match but an inch of dust can usually be found on the night tables and over the tops of the curtains and if there are no visible cloths that's because I have just thrown them all in the bottom of the closet, just in case someone looks in. OK I've confessed, please don't tell my childres!!! Good luck with the new bed, I always have trouble getting used to one, same with pillows....guess I just HATE change!!! Mel

Good luck with your bedroom. I know that as bad as yours is, mine is worse. I always keep the door closed, and no one ever goes in but family. I have cowboy boots under my bed, that we bought in Nevada when we went out on there on vacation, (1994) and had to have them. And 5 million dust bunnies!

How did you find out about how we live? You've described our bedroom perfectly, except you forgot to mention the mountainous pile of old xerox boxes full of magazines that block my husband's dresser which gives him an excuse to keep his socks in a heap on the floor. . . . . well, you get the picture. House Beautiful we ain't. I love your blog, by the way.

My husband is very anal retenetive, and as a result our house is pretty clean. If it wasn't for him, I would have a bedroom like yours as well! As it is, I leave clothes that are too clean to put in the hamper but too dirty to put back in with the fresh clothes on top of a chest at the foot of the bed. Once in a while these are in folded piles, but most of the time it is a big mess. My husband just sighs and says "Entropy" Gotta love a hubby thats more domsestic than I am!

I just had to laugh Sheri, at your description. It is not my bedroom that is like this (although it used to be, up until I got married!!! I live with a clean freak!) but now, it's my office. The rest of the house is fairly clean most of the time but that room, ugh!!!!

You are okay...sometimes we live out of baskets too!!!!
