My Valentine

Very quiet weekend here. We are just waiting for this giant Nor'easter that is supposed to be barreling up the east coast right into us sometime tonight and lasting all day tomorrow. Sure, old man winter.... wait til the middle of February before dumping winter on us. We can take it. Plus, this week it's been very cold. Today the high temperature was all of 21 degrees. Add a little nippy wind to that and by gosh - you'd better have your woollies on.

Hannah's school is having a Father-Daughter Valentine Dance tonight and here is Hannah all ready to go. She picked the dress out herself. It has a scratchy petticoat under it that I think will probably drive her insane before the night is over. Between that scratching and reaching up under her dress to hyke her tights up... her ladylike manners leave something to be desired. I say let them twist and complain about those tights now because once you become an adult..... I guess you're supposed to suffer in silence through that kind of thing. You don't know how many times I used to wear pantyhose to work and would've loved nothing better than to just hyke up my skirt, scream argh and twist and pull those things back to a comfortable position. I know pantyhose and tights were invented by some evil, wretched person.

My niece, Ariel, received some fabulous news yesterday. She has been accepted into the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine program. Holy shit! We are going to have a doctor in our family. Can you imagine? It truly kind of blows my mind because it's one of those things you dream of when they are little but wonder if it will really come true. Ariel has worked her ass off through 4 years of Boston University and then an accelerated program at Brandeis and now she's off to medical school for another 4 years.

The dedication some people have to their chosen profession is amazing. I didn't aspire to do much more than customer service for almost 16 years and I was happy with that. It's funny how some people have the drive to do more. One time I had a job that lasted a day (stop laughing!) at a factory that made medical supplies. My first day on the job, I was assigned to put a piece of cotton in a plastic widget thingy and then put the widget thingy into a glass tube and then put it in a box. When the box was full, someone removed it and put another empty box in its place. Another someone else was responsible to make sure the cotton box, the widget box and the glass tube box were never empty. The job never was finished. I couldn't stand it. When the break bell rang, someone hit a big shut down button and everything stopped. We all filed into the break room, standing around in our white coats smoking butts. When the break was over we went back to our jobs and at the end of our day, the next shift came in and took over. I didn't go back after the first day. I would have gone insane doing that job with no end in sight. Please don't think I'm uppity. I know there are people who do those kinds of jobs and bless them for doing so. There are just some jobs I wouldn't like to do.

Hannah looks so beautiful. I love those father/daughter mother daughter/son things. Brings us all a little closer.
I read about Ariel on Sue's post and I think that's just awesome. I am praying that my daughter will have high expectations for herself and be successful also. I'm one of those people you mentioned about not having the drive to do it. I met Tim my Senior year in High School and chose to be his girlfriend instead of going off to college someplace. Now, pushing 40, I have no clue what I want to do with the rest of my life. Kristen is at the age where she can be trusted alone and I really want to get out there in the working world and find myself but there just isn't anything out there. The Cotton Job you described just isn't for me either and with limited skills there's just nothing out there except working for Walmart and I don't really want to do that either. I'm sure I'll find something someday, for now I'll just stick with the little odd jobs like coaching at the school and my weekend job of cleaning offices and stuff.

Well how much snow did you end up getting? The strom hit us in Philly yesterday/last night and left us with about a foot of snow... I spent over a hour just digging out my car.

I heard you guys were getting hammered with snow! Ugh! We had a little today.

I took my girls to a Father/Daughter V-Day banquet the year my wife and I were seperated. It was one of the special times I will never forget. Oh and there is a NEW postcard posted! ;)

Awwww, I love the dance between fathers and daughters. My husband took my daughter last year and I thought it was the sweetest thing.

As for mundane jobs, I can't do them either although sometimes I feel housewife/mother falls into that category. LOL

Hannah looks great :)

I don't think it's uppity that manufacturing wasn't your thing. I worked cutting salmon for two years and trust me, there were days I wanted to quit too. At work at 5am. Dead fish. Cold water.

By the way, the wind blew most of the snow out of my driveway, but I almost slid past the road to work this morning. Don't have too much fun shoveling!

We had a dusting of snow. The big snow always misses the Cincy area.

Hannah looks beautiful!

Congrats to Ariel! That is simply fantastic.
