Technologically Challenged

My mother (Carolyn) has a couple friends named Ethelyn and Connie visiting for a few days and we were all having dinner together last night. Ethelyn, Connie and my mother have been friends for what seems like forever. They are all basically the same age ...mid to late 60's, enjoy the same things (quilting & crafts), and have a ball when they are together. Here's how a conversation went at the table last night:

Hannah: I have my own email address now, so I can send you an email and say hi!

Me: Sorry Hannah- they aren't in the 20th century yet.

Ethelyn: No dear, we don't have computers.

Connie: And if we did, I wouldn't know how to use one. Not like Carolyn. She's up on these things.

Me: (laughing) Connie, sometimes that's a problem. We created a monster by giving her a computer. She'll yell to me to come look at her 'tv' and I go over to her place and her tv isn't even on. She's talking about her monitor!

Ethelyn: (laughing) Sheri - your mother passed me the remote control when I asked if I could use her cellphone. (We all burst out laughing at my mother)

Mom: (a little miffed) So what! When I was reading the phone number to you - it's even worse that you were trying to dial it on the remote!

Remote controls, dvd's, monitors, digital answering machines, CD's, DVR's, TiVo, cellphones, PDA's, IPods...... they all run into one big blur of technology that my mom and her friends have a hard time grasping. My mother has an old actual ringing phone that she keeps in her house because she has a hard time hearing her cordless ring sometimes. Holy shit... this phone jumps that crap out of you when it rings. It sounds almost foreign to hear that BR-IIIII-NNNNNN-GGGG instead of a fancy-shmancy ringtone. We provide my mother with a cellphone in case of an emergency while she's traveling and all she can do is dial a number or answer the phone. Even retrieving a missed call is an ordeal. However, she has a sewing machine that is computerized and has no problem using it. She might have to get the instruction book out to figure something out... but she can do it. Why is it that she can do this but can't retrieve a voicemail on a cell phone?

We decided that it would be a good idea to give my Dad a computer after mom died...get him on the internet. We thought he'd be surfing hunting and tool sites...NOPE not my dad...he got right to the 'personals' and found himself a nutcase from Florida that came to stay with him for several months....TALK ABOUT CREATING A MONSTER!!!!!

Talk about creating a monster with a computer. My mom now knows about her health conditions than her doctors do. She will spend day after day just researching nonsense on the internet, but she still can't figure out the cable remote, or a cell phone.

I agree with eileen, sewing is more important than the phone to your mother. That has to be it because those sewing machines are easily as complicated as the other gadgets.

I created a monster with my mom by introducing her to "The Sims". She will call just to tell me about her families.

Very Fun Post Sheri! I loved it. I think all our parents are challenged in the was of this new world. And it is so funny sometimes to listen to what they think about new products...my dad takes aobut two months just to figure out a handheld electronic game.
