Good Luck!

In the summer, we always have Hannah tutored. Not for the entire summer, but for about 6 weeks, twice a week for about an hour each session. We've always felt the the continuing of her one on one sessions were good for her and it helps keep her up to speed. She's learned so much in the special education department and really enjoys the one on one help she receives. Both Gary and I have noticed a big difference in her phonic abilities and math skills throughout this past school year. For this summer, money is tight right now and we have been scrambling to try and figure out how to pay for both the tutoring and the summer rec program. Imagine my surprise to receive this phone call at 7:30 this morning:

ring ring

Me: Hello?

Hannah's Principal: Hi Sheri? Kathy ______ here. I wanted to run something by you if that's okay. Our school receives a scholarship grant each year to pay for summer tutoring of low income resident students. This summer, I can not get enough parents to commit to wanting to take advantage of that. I've tossed around whether or not I should call you to ask if that's something that Gary and you would like to do for Hannah.... I know you've paid for tutoring out of pocket in the past..... but I didn't want you to think that I considered you low income..... umm...... and well... your not on that list and we don't want to lose the grant, or have it down-sized if it's not used due to lack of interest....

Me: (interuppting her)Wait a minute.... no one on that list wants to have free tutoring for the summer? and you are offering it to us?

Principal: Apparently not enough to fill the slots we have available. I was very surprised myself because usually we have more tutor requests than money available.

Me: And this is the same tutoring we've paid for in the past? And it would be at no cost to us?

Principal: Right, it's fully paid for by the scholarship grant.

Me: Sign her up. Definitely. Put her down as a definite yes to that.

Principal: Great! The tutor will be calling you to set up the schedule and of course, they will work around your schedule as well, summer rec, camp and what not.

Can you believe that? Some good luck fell in our laps! A miracle in itself! I'm absolutely giddy with this but perplexed at the same time. Why would a parent not want some additional free help for their child in the education department? Well, I guess I won't waste time thinking about that....... I'll just revel in our good fortune.

My sister, Sue arrives this weekend for a week at the coast. She and her sister in law rent a house on Goose Rocks Beach that is awesome! At this point I will share a few pictures of the place she goes to. It's such a rustic, charming beachside cottage. It used to be a dancehall.... very striking and such a fun place to visit!

That is great news! So glad that everything worked out for your family and you all will not have to juggle the finances to make it all work.

I am also amazed that no other family took advantage of free one-on-one teaching for their child. That seems like such a waste of a great opportunity.

Yay to the scholarship and yay to the photos of the westerly! I seriously can't wait to come down on Saturday. Martha and new boyfriend, Danny, are driving down just for Sat. night. We (Avis and I) should be arriving about 2 pm. My plans for the week are, walking, eating, drinking, sleeping, reading, not in that order of course. The correct order would be drinking, eating, sleeping, reading, walking! LOL!

Yeah for the school thinking of you. I wish mom could still travel, I loved our visit to that little cabin at Goose Rocks. Thanks for the pictures they helped bring the memories back. Of course I didn't get to see it empty.

very good luck I would say... I can attest to summer tutoring. WHile i wasn't tutored by someone that came to our house, my dad made my brother and I do math and English lessons 2 or 3 times a week at home for a few hours. I really think that helped a lot.
